Looking Ahead to Print Design in 2010

Posted on Thursday, February 25, 2010 in Desktop Publishing, Printing Tips, Promotion, graphic design, marketing

I recently ran across a blog that talks a little bit about web advances that have lead to design changes online. It also talks a lot about elements of design that cross over from web design to print design. You can read Design Trends among Blogs to see some interesting examples of trends. This blog got me to thinking — changes are coming, and no matter what the source they will affect all areas of design.

Round Edges
This slight alteration in design makes a huge difference in the overall look of design. Poster design and poster printing with rounded edges demonstrates a new level of sophistication. The capabilities of design programs have increased to include new options for printed design. The improvements are evident.

Large Graphics
Another advancement in technology allows larger images to load more quickly, making them easier to work with. These larger images make a big impact on direct mail. Oversized images for brochure and postcard printing will be stunning.

Larger Headlines/Custom Type
Headlines are going to continue to be the center of attention, but taking center stage even more. Type has become an art form rather than a medium for information. Designers are starting to create their own custom fonts, and you will see more and more of this in 2010.

Third Dimension
A new level of depth will be added to printed design this year. Shadows and angles will serve to draw attention to the key content on posters and other printed media.

Theme
Designers appear to be shifting toward themed design. These themes help to associate design with companies, reinforcing brand and adding some edge. Grunge is a hot new theme. The 90’s are coming back.

Specific design
General design is out and specific design is in. Designers are targeting audiences with new and specific taste. The purpose for design will become more important.

Make sure to look at this site. It has some great examples of the changes that are taking place right now. The trends in design are truly happening. One more thing I see happening is designers reverting to simplistic ideas. Fancier technology does not mean fancier design. I believe that new design tools allow simple design to look cleaner and more sophisticated. Truly the designs that are timeless are the ones that will be noticed.
