The Nitty-Gritty of Catalog Design
Catalogs are a great way to sell your products. Many people prefer browsing through the pages from the comfort of their own home, rather than fighting the crowds in your store, especially during the holidays. If you have never before been involved in catalog printing or simply need a refresher course, you can follow some very simple rules of organization to make your design as effective as it can be.
Make sure that the cover, front and back, are pleasing to the eye
Research shows that many customers start from the back of a catalog and work their way to the front. For these customers, treat the back cover with as much care as the front. Place your brand clearly on the cover. Create an uncluttered look that is consistent with your company’s image. Remember that the more aesthetically pleasing the catalog, the more likely that it will be opened.
Carefully place your product on the inside pages
The eye falls on the upper right hand corner of a two page section, the top left for those who browse backwards. Place your most attractive products in these areas of each spread. Be sure to rotate placement of products as you print new catalogs so that the pages do not become mundane.
Be consistent with your page design
Too many font styles and sizes will cause an unnecessary distraction from your product. Keep it simple and consistant. Use no more than three different types of font and use the same three for the same text throughout the catalog. For instance, use one font for your headings, one for your subheadings, and one for your body text. In catalog printing, consistency helps to create brand loyalty, so make your style is your own so that your brand is easily recognized.
Use product photos well
As much as possible give each product its own picture. If necessary, combine like products and clearly mark them within photographs. And always use color photos for catalog printing. Studies show that color catalogs sell 25% more than black and white. Your printer should offer full color, also known as four color, printing for the best results.
Use standard sizes to save money
The most cost effective method of catalog printing is to stick to the common sizes:
• Standard full size (8.5 x 11″)
• Slim (6 x 9″)
• Digest-size (8.5 x 5.5″)
Also printers use sets of 16 pages, so if your catalog is a multiple of 16, your cost will be less than if you choose an odd number.
Include easy order forms
Many people use online and phone order, so make your phone number and web address easy to find and use. However, there are still those who prefer to order product through the mail. Always include a simple order form that makes ordering easy.
Not only will a catalog urge your customers to buy your product, but an attractive and well-organized catalog will improve your likability and will sell more product. And now that you have some design basics underhand, you can begin the production process and on your way to a successful catalog campaign.
